History of SEO

arif anjum
As new of a term it might seem to most people, the history of SEO is quite extensive. Search Engine Optimization has been an ongoing practice in the internet world, with roots stemming back to the early 90′s. Although the SEO styles of 2012 are exponentially different from those of the early internet, the evolution of search engine optimization can be easily tracked.

Brief History of SEO:

  • 1995 – Yahoo Launches its Web Directory
  • 1998 – Google Launches, DMOZ launches this same year
  • 2000 – Yahoo Drops Altavista, Uses Google’s Algorithm
  • 2001 – PageRank is showed to users through the toolbar
  • 2005 – NoFollow Tag Introduced
  • 2009 – Google Introduces Caffeine Algorithm, a major shift in SEO.
  • 2009 – Bing and Yahoo Merge
  • 2011 – Panda Algorithm Update. A major step in the history of SEO
  • 2012 – Penguin Algorithm Update

The History of SEO – Early Years

The internet was not a singular invention. It was not created at one point in time by one person. The internet we know today came from a collaboration of many efforts and ideas by the computer innovators of the past few decades. However, the history of SEO has its start in the early 1990′s, where search engines began their early stages of development to help organize the sites listed on the internet. In 1995, optimization was born in the young stages of Yahoo. Internet users needed a way to sort out the abundance of sites registered on the rapidly expanding web. Alphabetical optimizations were formed, and formatted in the “yellow page” style like phonebooks. The next year, 1996, comprehension for things like keyword density and seasoning began to take hold. As the year progressed, determined individuals began to understand database algorithms, and the methods used in basic search engines.
Around 1997, Yahoo became the paramount submission site, and anyone who wanted to be recognized on the internet quickly learned that submitting their site to Yahoo was the only option. This year, SEO exploded in the public internet society, although what was used to get results then are insanely alien to the main tactics of today’s site ranking process. From late 1998 to early 1999, submission spamming became the general method of site rank. However, new algorithms brought new tactics, as SEO’s started to utilize multi-language platforms, word lists, and other innovative strategies. As the new millennium came, vast changes flooded the horizon of the SEO world.

All Google, All the Time

Between the years of 2000 and 2001, the internet experienced a massive shift. Google’s PageRank system and new ranking algorithms cut out most of the spam tactics that were extremely successful in the prior submission sites. Google changed the game as they came on to the scene. They revolutionized the way SEO’s approached site ranking. As the company expanded, their ideas for how sites should organized and ranked exploded beyond all previous thoughts. Their new algorithms overthrew previous site ranking strategies, causing search engine optimization to take a step in a new direction.
arif anjum
Google Changed the History of SEO when it was introduced in 1998.
Moving away from directory submissions and other older tactics, Google’s computer programmers introduced new bots that crawled the internet. These bots began scanning sites and looking for certain aspects like keyword density and relevant backlinks. Prior to this, sites that wanted to rank for a certain word would just post hidden pages. Text with a word repeated a thousand times, could usually become high ranked instantly. However, this simple strategy would not fly with Google. Their bots, known as “crawlers” became programmed to scan sites and pick up on duplicate content both on the site or on other sites. As Google became smarter and smarter, SEO’s did as well. As time passed, Google started to rely heavily on the amount of backlinks each site had. If Site A had 100 more links than Site B, Site A would receive the higher ranking. SEO’s caught on to this, and came out with innovative tactics to gain thousands of simple links easily. However, just as before, Google’s webspam team adapted to the new SEO methods of internet users.

New Horizons: Social Media

ARIF ANJUM

ARIF ANJUM

ARIF ANJUM
This constant battle of cat and mouse continued on and on, and still exists today; however, the introduction of Social Networking Sites once again revolutionized the SEO industry. A relatively new style of site, early social networks were rather niche and carried limited impact on site ranking. However, today’s world literally lives through the social networking medium, with sites like Facebook and Twitter carrying global impaction. As insane as it may sound, the recent revolution in Syria came around partially because of the mass sharing of information via twitter. This modern age of lightspeed communications and mass connectivity brought SEO and Google site ranking to a whole new level.
As sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Pintrest, Instagram, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Digg, etc., have reached billions of people worldwide, mankind is more connected than ever before. For Google, this creates a whole new batch of problems that need to be sorted out and integrated in to the ranking algorithm. Not only do sites need to have unique content and gratuitous amounts of natural backlinks, sites need social recognition as well. Having a social presence over the internet shows the actual popularity of site, and is an aspect that is very difficult to falsely create. Currently, Google and SEO’s find themselves in a continuous battle, with both sides taking victories as well as defeats. However, as history has shown us, there are always new ideas rapidly approaching on the horizon.
One thing is for sure, SEO will never die. The History of SEO is constantly changing, we will see more user metrics and higher level algorithms. White Hat SEO will soon become the only form of SEO.

Why SEO is important for an e-commerce business

In today  SEO has become very important for an e-commerce business in order to drive more customers to business as many people use search engine like Google, Yahoo, Bing etc. to get appropriate results of their queries. SEO can drive much traffic to any e-commerce business and can help business in creating potential customers, generating profit and revenue by placing the e-commerce site on the top of SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages).
The traffic achieved by SEO is called organic traffic. SEO methods are very effective in building and continuous and steady visitors to e-commerce websites. The effectiveness of this traffic can be measured by comparing effectiveness of offline advertisements and effectiveness of online campaigns.
SEO techniques are very beneficial for an e-commerce website, if SEO is done very effectively and efficiently then the results obtained last for a long time and provides steady and continuous users and customers to e-commerce websites.
For an effective SEO technique, relevant Meta, keywords, description should be used. Unique keywords should be targeted, so that the websites face less competition. Common and popular keywords have tough competition so unique keywords should be targeted.
The complete process of SEO is wasted if the visitors come, visit the site and go away without any interaction. So, SEO should be done carefully and effectively in order to obtain maximum profit and revenue. SEO is important for both profitable and non profitable websites. SEO is generally used for making the websites popular among people by raking the websites high in the Search Engine Result Pages.

search engine optimization (optimizer) - SEO

SEO is short for search engine optimization or search engine optimizer.
Search engine optimization is a methodology of strategies, techniques and tactics used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine (SERP) -- including Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines.
SEO helps to ensure that a site is accessible to a search engine and improves the chances that the site will be found by the search engine.
It is common practice for Internet users to not click through pages and pages of search results, so where a site ranks in a search is essential for directing more traffic toward the site. The higher a website naturally ranks in organic results of a search, the greater the chance that that site will be visited by a user.
SEO is typically a set of "white hat" best practices that webmasters and Web content producers follow to help them achieve a better ranking in search engine results. Search Engine Land's Guide To SEO explains the ranking factors in more depth, in a tutorial providing tips and advice on implementing them.

Best SEO Techniques 2013

If you ever wondered, What are the best SEO Techniques ( link building , tags, directories, etc..) You are in trouble. No SEO Technique alone can be considered as the best. The companies are devoting to know SEO, so they seek to diversify SEO techniques to develop.

Best SEO Techniques 2013

Arif anjum

Top 3 Best SEO Techniques 2013

In line with the comments about the SEO trends , now it’s time to see the recommended techniques.

1. Generate Quality Content

Creating quality content is not an easy task. Companies are designing content strategies, and for larger companies, the strategies are rather complex. Imagine a company that offers dozens of products in each of these different types, sizes, styles. Each offering a different experience to the customer. What is the best way that we can optimize our content? Here are some ideas to keep in mind:
  • The Content of a Page should not be too long
  • If you distribute content in parts, it must be consistent
  • Note the keywords, but do not abuse. Should be used naturally in the content.
  • Use H tags to distribute your articles better
  • Use the bold text and internal links
  • Beware of duplicate content
  • Links to external sites with relevant content
  • Update content for your web site continuously

2. Build Backlinks

There are many ways to generate inbound links (link building). The most common are through social networks (Delicious, Twitter, Facebook, etc.), Forums, blogs, etc.. And even writing articles on quality sites or paying to publish one with a link to our site. But leaving that aside, there are some tips you should keep in mind:

Must be unique content

If you’re writing a guest post on a blog, do not repeat the same content in another. Many people were posting the same items in different sites to generate inbound links.
Conclusion: Your inbound links should come from unique content.

Vary Link Text

The Anchor Text should not be the same. A common practice of spammers is to repeat the same phrase to link. What is not normal or natural. If you want generate the link value to your website, you should make sure that your text is within the context of the article or piece of content that is being treated. This is very important, especially now that the search engines analyze contents semantically .

3. Enlarge Traffic Sources (Bing)

Currently Techlato gets about 10-15% of search traffic from Bing and I’m sure the potential is much greater. Moreover, the mere fact that our SEO strategy depends on a single search engine. Of course, Google is the main search engine, but we must never neglect the optimization for the other search engines. Among some tips to keep in mind to optimize our SEO techniques for Bing and Yahoo , we have:
  • Emphasis on the label title: Bing is mindful of the keywords used in the title of the page, not only the H1 article.
  • This is not confirmed, but according to experts, usually Bing values better pages with over 300 words in your content.
  • The links are so important to Google &  Bing.
  • Bing recommends you use Meta Tags for each page only
  • Use schema.org markup
  • Use friendly URLs.
  • Use the tools that Bing offers: Bing Webmaster Tools.
Remember to optimize for Bing & Yahoo.

Plus: Optimize for Local Search

Buying Offline by Searching Online has been a growing pratice. So if you have the website of a small business, you must focus on capturing local traffic. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
  • Displays your correct address and phone number.
  • Your website must be optimized for mobile devices, and if not optimized, at least should not have breaks.
  • Use a domain local extension.
  • Associate your country domain in Google webmaster tools.
  • Use a local hosting.
  • Use regional language properly written. For example, not just write an article for one of Argentina to Mexico.
  • Get inbound links from sites with local domain extension.
  • It is also advisable to have links to local directories like the Yellow Pages of your country.
I hope this article on Best SEO Techniques 2013 will be useful. If you disagree with any or if you feel that I have omitted other, I invite you to leave a comment. And in any case, to share it.

Measuring Conversions

Conversion metrics are among the most important indicators to measure and monitor. Conversion rates are easy to measure and can be improved by fine-tuning your website; thus every online business should watch these numbers and have Plan B ready in case key conversion rates suddenly plunge.
When you measure conversions you are also looking at abandonment – the visitors who got away. Maybe they intended to complete an action but were frustrated during the process and bailed out. Industry average conversion rates hover around 3 percent. This means only 3 out of 100 visitors complete an intended action.
What conversion rates should you measure? There are three basic processes that can be measured for conversion versus abandonment:
  • Activities that lead to an acquisition.
  • Activities that lead to gathering important data.
  • Activities that direct visitor to information that reduces your operational costs (e.g., fewer calls to your tech support group).
Each activity should subtly be directing the visitor toward conversion. Before any further analysis can be done, it is important you can identify (1) which processes on your website are candidates for measurement, and (2) how your web analytics solution will achieve these analyses. Ask yourself the following questions when deciding which processes to measure. Yes answers indicate that the process is a good one to measure.
  • Can visitors contact you if they have difficulty with the process?
  • Will you be able to collect the appropriate data when visitors complete the process so that you can retain them in the future?
  • If visitors have difficulty on your site, can they complete a similar process on a competitor site?
Before going into the details of conversion metrics, it is important to note that you are dealing with two types of conversions, your website conversions and your marketing campaign conversions.

Website Conversions

Once you have decided which site-wide processes to measure and how to measure them, the following metrics can help you understand visitor success or failure:
  • Home to purchase – abandonment rate for visitors going through sales path.
  • Search to purchase – abandonment rate for visitors coming from site search.
  • Special offer to purchase – effect of various merchandising and pricing options.
  • Lead generation –abandonment rate when personal data is requested.

Marketing Campaign Conversions

It is important to measure the effect of marketing campaigns on your website traffic. The following metrics are specific to marketing campaigns aimed at driving traffic to your site.
  • Campaign conversion rate – effect of traffic from specific campaigns.
  • Cost-per-conversion – cost effectiveness for specific campaigns.
  • Campaign ROI -- cost effectiveness for specific campaigns.
  • Segment conversion rates – track conversion progress over time.
  • Percent of orders from new and repeat customers – determines effectiveness of marketing or customer retention programs.
  • New and repeat customer conversion rates – helps understand barriers to online purchases.
  • Sales per visitor – measures marketing efficiency.
Below are the key indicators you should track regardless of business model:
  • Conversion rates for any process that makes or saves money, or is critical to the customer experience.
  • Campaign conversion rate for current campaigns, or the most expensive campaigns if too numerous.
  • Cost-per-conversion for the campaigns you selected to monitor.
  • Segment conversion rates for key or critical group conversions.
Below are the key indicators e-commerce sites should track:

arif anjum

  • Site-wide conversion rate (all purchases to all visits or visitors)
  • New and repeat site-wide customer conversion rates
  • Percent of orders from new and returning customers
  • Average order value, site-wide and for new and returning customers
  • Sales per visitor (compare to site-wide conversion rate)

Advanced SEO Techniques

The advanced SEO techniques mentioned in this article all refer to onsite SEO and don't contain any tips on advanced link building strategies. When optimising your website you first need to make sure that your website is as good as it can be to aid the search engines in returning your pages as the most relevant for a particular search query. Below I will discuss some of the more advanced techniques that you can implement into your website to help search engine rankings.
Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI)
Latent semantic indexing or LSI for short is a not as well known as the more popular SEO techniques but however, can prove to be just as effective, but what is LSI? LSI is used in search engine algorithms to detect words surrounding a particular anchor text link or within a body of content within a webpage. However this is by no means the only place that LSI is applied to. What all this actual means is a search engine will look at text that surrounds a link and looks for words that are associated with that keyphrase or industry type. For example if you had this sentence. "For the best SEO services visit our website". If the anchor text in this sentence was SEO then other words in this sentence will be analysed by the search engines to see if they match with known words associated with SEO. Some examples would be experts, professionals, services and company and so on. Therefore it is a good idea to use this approach in your content writing. If you write your content naturally then you will find that the semantic words will already have been placed in your content. You should never write content for the sole purpose of SEO as this can interrupt the flow of your text and appear disjointed to the end reader. Always write for the website visitor with SEO in mind.
Linking Architecture
You must make sure your website internal linking is done correctly and make sure you don't have orphan pages that the search engines can't get access to. Unless of course you have pages that you don't want search engines to access and in this case you should use a robot.txt file in your website to instruct search engines not to index these pages. If you are looking for an SEO company who can adopt advanced SEO techniques on your website design then try here. There is not enough room here to write how to best set up your linking architecture as you could write a book on this alone. What I will say is check Wikipedia' website and analysis how this site uses good linking architecture

Keywords; The search hierarchy

Before selecting the keywords you want to target, it’s worth understanding the web consumer’s search process. Of course, everyone will have their element of randomness but in principle, when looking to purchase online, people use a hierarchy of descriptors that funnel from broad to specific, as follows:
THEME > CATEGORY> LOCALISATION> BRAND> PRODUCT
An example of this might be:
CHEAP HOLIDAYS> CITY BREAKS> LONDON> EXPEDIA> 3 NIGHTS IN PICCADILLY HOTEL
This search process creates a whole series of possible touch points for your site. Depending on your product or service capabilities, and where you would like to meet the consumer in their purchasing decision, will dictate which keywords you target.

Keyword Research

Trying to compete on very competitive keywords at the generic ‘theme’ level will be difficult if you are a new or smaller site/business. This is where you need to do a little research:
  1. Make a relevant assessment of your strength from products through to site proficiency.
  2. Look at what the competition are doing: what keywords are they targeting for?
  3. Assess the market. Are you niche or mainstream? Is your product/service seasonal? What’s the longevity of your business or shape of things to come?
  4. Research what search terms are popular and relevant to your business. There are a range of free keyword suggestion tools that can help with this.
  5. Consider your ROI. What’s your budget? Can you afford any wastage? How much converting traffic do you need to return a profit?

Benefit of tail terms

If, after answering these questions, you realise that you cannot compete on top level, ‘major’ keywords, fear not. ‘Tail term’ keywords are generally keyphrases that reflect the more targeted end of the online purchasing process (the long tail). Combining several words that contain ‘localisation’, ‘brand’ or ‘product’ descriptors will ensure you meet the web user at their point of sale. They will have made the decision on the type of purchase they want to make and now be fine tuning. While it is true to say that you won’t receive particularly high levels of traffic from tail term keywords, as by their very nature they are less frequently searched, you will get higher conversion rates. Targeting a good number of tail terms will ensure a positive effect on your baseline ROI due to the high propensity to purchase and lower levels of competition at this end of the tail.

The world of search engine optimization is a complicated one, and if you’re a “non-techie” business owner who’s been thrown into webmaster duties for the simple sake of having a business web presence, just learning the basics of SEO might seem overwhelming.
Unfortunately, the web’s search engine spiders don’t care about how skilled you are in the technical arena.  What they care about is the content they can read on your pages, so if you aren’t utilizing both basic and advanced SEO techniques on your website, you risk being indexed and ranked for the wrong words – or none at all!
For this reason, it’s important to familiarize yourself with SEO techniques and to implement SEO best practices to the best of your abilities.  Fair warning – the following three topics may seem complex.  However, if you invest a little time in reading more about them, you should be able to implement them in a way that makes sense for you and your website.
Let’s get started!

Technique #1 – Canonicalization
Canonicalization sounds tricky, but it’s not that difficult to understand.  Essentially, there are a number of situations that can cause content on your website to appear on multiple URLs.  These instances can cause your site to be indexed improperly or to trigger duplicate content filters, in which the search engine spiders must determine which version of your content (if any) to display in the SERPs.
The easiest example to understand is that your website can be accessed from both “http://www.mysite.com” and “http://mysite.com”.  If you have inbound links pointing at both of these URLs, they’ve likely both been indexed by the search engine spiders, which can lead to complications in terms of how link juice is passed and how your site appears in the SERPs.
Similarly, if you use a platform like WordPress (which dynamically creates category and tag pages that display your articles in multiple locations) or a service that adds tracking or session IDs to your URLs (for example, “http://www.mysite.com/file.php?var1=value&mysession=123”), the search engines could be indexing multiple copies of your original articles.
To prevent these situations from influencing where and how your site is ranked in the SERPs, consider implementing the following best practices:
  • Use a 301 redirect (which we’ll get into next) to ensure your site is indexed at either the “www” version or the “non-www” version of your domain name (not both).
  • Build any external backlinks using the same URL structure you set with your redirect.
  • Use caution when building your site to ensure all internal links are structured the same.
  • Add the rel=”canonical” tag to your pages to specify which URLs should be indexed by the search engines.  Be aware, though, that this is only a suggestion – the search engines are not required to adhere to the URL preferences you specify with this tag.
For more recommendations on how to handle canonicalization issues, take a look at the following resources:
Technique #2 – Redirects
Deploying proper redirects on your site follows a similar principle as canonicalization.  That is, if you move content on your website (or from one website to another), you’ll want to be sure the search engine spiders are properly informed of the move and able to find and access your content in its new location.
There are two types of redirects that are commonly used in web development: 301 and 302.
301 redirects are permanent redirects.  Using this specific code tells the search engines that your content has been moved permanently and should be indexed at its new location.  301 redirects have the advantage of passing link juice and accumulated SEO authority to your content’s new home, which makes them incredibly valuable from a search perspective.
302 redirects, on the other hand, are temporary redirects.  A 302 redirect tells the search engines, “I’ve moved this content temporarily, but it will be back.  Please don’t attempt to redirect SEO authority away from my original URL.”
In most cases, you’ll want to use 301 redirects to control how the search engines index moved or deleted content.  To learn how to deploy this type of redirect correctly, check out the following articles:

Technique #3 – Schema.org microdata
Microdata – which sounds significantly more complicated than it really is – is a language that’s used to add supplementary tags to your site’s HTML in order to provide more data to the search engine spiders and result in the creation of “Rich Snippets.”
When you think about the tags included in traditional HTML, it’s easy to see where some major deficiencies lie.  Typically, the only tags found in your site’s code include the body tag, title tag, meta description tag, heading tags and a few others.  While the search engines are able to capture the data stored in these tags, they occasionally run into challenges analyzing this information qualitatively.
For example, suppose you built a website reviewing the popular movie, “Avatar.”  Your initial code might look something like this:
<div>
<h1>Avatar</h1>
<span>Director: James Cameron (born August 16, 1954)</span>
<span>Science fiction</span>
<a href=”../movies/avatar-theatrical-trailer.html”>Trailer</a>
</div>

And while the search engine spiders will be able to tell that you’ve written a page about the word “Avatar”, they can’t conclusively determine from this limited text whether your content is about the movie or about online profile pictures.
By adding Schema.org microdata, we can add extra information within our website’s code to instruct the search engines on how to process and index this content.  In the following example, the sample code shared above is modified with the “Movie” schema tag, which informs the search engines that what follows is content based on a movie called “Avatar”:
<div itemscope itemtype ="http://schema.org/Movie">
  <h1 itemprop="name">Avatar</h1>
  <span>Director: James Cameron</span> (born August 16, 1954)</span>
  <span Science fiction</span>
  <a href="../movies/avatar-theatrical-trailer.html">Trailer</a>
</div>

Not only does this Schema.org microdata help our sites to be indexed more appropriately.  When integrated correctly, sites marked up with microdata become eligible to use “Rich Snippets” (basically, SERPs listings with additional information) in the search results pages.  These snippet enhancements can result in an increased clickthrough rate from the SERPs, making the time needed to mark up a website with standard microdata well worth the effort.
The following image shows two SERPs listings that are fully marked up with Schema.org microdata and two that are not.  If you wound up on this results page, which result would you be more likely to click
through to?
